Our Inspiration

Edwin Carter,

Log Cabin Naturalist

Edwin Carter traveled west in 1868 to try his hand at gold mining. He quickly became distressed at the impact the mining industry was having on the natural environment and dedicated himself to preserving and documenting Rocky Mountain wildlife. Carter created almost 3,300 taxidermized specimens, which he stored and displayed in his own log cabin in Breckenridge. Carter’s specimens were prepared and organized with such care that they remained useful to scientists decades later. After his death, his collection formed the basis of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Today, you can learn more about this remarkable citizen turned scientist at the Edwin Carter Museum, located in Carter’s former home at 111 North Ridge Street, one block from Main Street in downtown Breckenridge.
